IYKYK EXPERIMENTAL SHORT FILM FROM YOUTH FX REMIX/REBELLION PROGRAM PREMIERES THURSDAY APRIL 2nd @ 4PM AT UALBANY ART MUSEUM.
Remix/Rebellion is a new Youth FX program that brings together a collective of young filmmakers from across our programs, connecting them with internationally renowned multi-disciplinary visual artists to experiment at the intersections of cinema, contemporary art, and culture. The program is a provocation, exploring the expansive possibilities of remix culture in music, experimental film, video art, and multi-channel gallery installation.
For the first iteration of the program we collaborated with artist Noel W. Anderson, leaning into an emergent, trust-based, creative process to explore new cinematic language and imagine multiple ways that the moving image can be activated as a form of resistance and reclamation. Through guided workshops, critical conversations, screenings, collaborative script writing, and a deeply intentional production process which was centered around Anderson's Black Excellence exhibition at the University of Albany Art Museum, Remix/Rebellion encouraged participants to challenge dominant narratives, and push beyond traditional modes of filmmaking.
Over the course of the program, the collective of Youth FX filmmakers engaged with Anderson in a dynamic creative process that challenged them to think critically about the role of the remix in art, music and experimental film as a form of artistic provocation and a rebellion against mainstream images of Blackness.
This collaborative process, which took place over the course of eight months, reimagined how cinema and visual art can coexist as tools for expression, resistance, and transformation, and culminated in the creation of an original experimental short film, titled IYKYK, that reflects their personal and shared experiences.
The film will screen on April 2nd at 4pm at the University of Albany Art Museum during the final week of Anderson’s Black Excellence exhibition and will be followed by a Q & A with the artists who collectively created the work. We’ll also be screening the film at our upcoming world premiere and encore screenings of new Youth FX films from across our programs which will take place on Thursday April 23rd and Tuesday April 28th at Spectrum 8 Theaters!
